It was here, at St. John’s Church, that Patrick Henry delivered his immortal “Give me liberty, or give me death!” speech that ignited a fire for liberty that swept through the colonies and helped rally the cause of independence. And Richmond’s influence on the founding of our nation didn’t stop there. The Virginia Statute for Religious Freedom, enacted here and penned by Thomas Jefferson, helped lay the foundation for the First Amendment.
