All over this region, you can stand where history happened. If you drive up the cobblestoned streets of Church Hill, you can see Patrick Henry deliver his “Give Me Liberty, Or Give Me Death” speech at St. John’s Church. Follow the Revolutionary Trail to see where Henry argued legal cases and spent his free time at Hanover Courthouse and Hanover Tavern. Stand next to Civil War cannons at Malvern Hill Battlefield, then visit the Dabbs House Museum. Walk back 400 years in time at Henricus Historical Park to see where Pocahontas lived. Walk the Richmond Slave Trail, and trace the steps of thousands who were forced to come here as enslaved workers. Tour the Jackson Ward district, known as the birthplace of Black entrepreneurship and the Harlem of the South. This is where our country started, and grew, and fought, and fought again.
